Issue with homebrew Genesis VGMs (samples not playing)

Hi all. I'm new here, so if this isn't the proper place to post bug reports, please forgive me (and move this to a more appropriate place).

I've been a faithful Modizer user for the past two years or so. Great application, worth every penny I spent on it.

I expect few of you to have heard of me, but I'm a chiptune artist. I specialise in NSFs, though lately I've been delving more and more into the world Sega Genesis/Megadrive music. When I tried playing my VGMs in Modizer though, I stumbled upon a slight problem: the DAC does not seem to produce any sound.

At first I thought the libraries used by Modizer did not support the YM2612 DAC, but then I threw a commercial soundtrack rip at it (Shining Force II, if you're curious), and sure enough, the samples played, loud and clear. Then I thought it might be an issue with Deflemask (the tracker I used to make my VGMs), but I tried another homebrew Genesis VGM, this time one exported from VGMMM, and still got no sound from the DAC. But then I tried another VGM from this same tracker, and then the DAC worked just fine.

Needless to say I'm very confused by this. Both Deflemask and VGMMM are closed source, so there's no way to peek at that to reveal any underlying issues with the exporter. I can, however, share the VGMs I tried. None of them is my own, because I'm extremely new at Genesis music and I haven't released any full tune for it, but two are demos that come with the software, and the third one was made open-source by the author, so I assume it's okay to share them.

Deflemask VGM: Chippin' (by DemickXII)
VGMMM VGM (samples don't work): Advanced Variable Geo 2 (CHEMOOL) - Tamao Stage ~Starry Emotion~ (by dj.tuBIG/MaliceX)
VGMMM VGM (samples do work): Trinitron Sunset (by boomlinde)

It should be noted that all of those VGMs sound fine in all other VGM players I tried (foo_gep, in_vgm, VGMPlay). I don't have an Everdrive, so I can't test them on hardware, but if somebody else does, then I'd be curious to know what's what.

So yeah, if yoyofr (or anyone else who knows about this stuff) could take a look at those files and tell me if the issue is on the Modizer side or the tracker side, I'd be grateful. If the problem turns out to be with the trackers, then I'll pass the information along to Delek so he can fix Deflemask (VGMMM has been discontinued, unfortunately). Otherwise, a fix would be nice for Modizer 1.8. ( 'w')

While we're on the subject of VGMs, I made a post in another thread, but I suppose I'll drop a line here as well: the VGMPlay libraries would be an amazing asset to Modizer. The VGM format has evolved significantly over the past year or so, and now supports dozens upon dozens of sound chips & platforms (NES, Gameboy, PC-Engine, OPL3, OPM, various arcade systems...). The project is open-source; I don't pretend to know much at all about programming, but if this could somehow be integrated into Modizer, I would be a very happy man indeed (and perhaps would consider donating a coin or two to the project!). :)

Okay, I'm done now. You may carry on doing other stuff. Cheers!

Re: Issue with homebrew Genesis VGMs (samples not playing)

Hi, jrlepage,

Modizer uses the Game Music Emu library to play back VGM files. The
version in Modizer is quite old at this point, so I'm not too
surprised that there are compatibility problems. There is a newer
release of GME, and I've been meaning to upgrade Modizer's copy. That
may help.

Alternately I can look at including VGMPlay and using that to play
back VGMs, but that would of course be more involved.

I realise integrating VGMPlay would be more involved, but the benefits would be HUGE!! :D

I too would vouch for this; vgmplay is great and if it could be integrated into modizer it would probably solve quite a few compatibility issues.

Re: Issue with homebrew Genesis VGMs (samples not playing)

I m currently updating gme to latest version (kode54 version, the one used in foobar2000 plugin).
I ll do some test and also check if vgmplay can be added. The user will have to choose the default player then, the same way dumb/modplug/uade can be selectef as default player for mod files.
